Rutherford “Tubby” Brown (1929–2003) was a retired grocer and self-taught artist from Jefferson, Georgia, and bosom buddy of R.A. Miller of Rabbittown, Georgia, Old Cornelia Highway. I met him on one of my many visits to R.A.’s and Tubby invited me to see his artworks. I followed him to his home studio where I acquired this vintage bottle cutout.
Many of Tubby Brown’s works have rough edges and sides, holes, cracks, stains, peeling paint, bending, warping, and unsquared corners and procured from salvaged materials and repurposed for his artworks. It is typical for them to have nail holes because he tacked them to the wall of his studio when presented for sale.
